The man and woman in fancy dress are portrayed as figures in a classical or mythological story; it is not known what story. The man’s redness is striking: he may represent a Roman general in his triumphal procession, painted red as was the custom for military leaders on those occasions. The woman holds her hand on her breast as a sign of faithfulness, while the man feels her pulse. This ‘pulse-taking of love’ shows him whether her love is sincere. The love between man and woman is also symbolised by the winged cupid with bow and arrow. The boy is probably a child of the couple portrayed.
