Stadholder Frederick Henry as the bringer of peace. The city authorities commissioned this allegory, intended for the Prinsenhof in Haarlem, in honour of the House of Orange. It was a posthumous tribute to Frederick Henry, under whose rule the Peace of Münster (1648) was prepared. As trumpets sound, Frederick Henry is crowned with a laurel wreath and welcomed by the Maid of Haarlem. The horn she holds shows the prosperity that peace brings. Also present is the Maid of Holland with the shield with seven arrows bound together, one for each of the United Provinces. In the background the silhouette of St. Bavo’s at the Grote Markt emerges against the ‘dawn of liberty’.
