Cornelis van Haarlem made two portraits of Haarlem officers’ corps. The first was painted in 1583 and is believed to be the earliest portrait of a Haarlem corps. This civic guard portrait garnered almost instant praise for its lively portrayal of the subjects. As a member of the same company, Cornelis van Haarlem knew the men well, which undoubtedly contributed to this vitality. He painted himself wearing a hat upper left. The bearded man beside him was his teacher, Pieter Pietersz. The young man lower left, looking at us, is probably his brother Hans.
