By Jan Wouwerman

Beach and Dune View
Beach and Dune View Beach and Dune View

A typical Dutch coastal scene, complete with a beacon on a dune and a sailing ship close to the beach. Wouwerman’s feeling for atmospheric effects is palpable in this work. The figures play a subordinate role and are there primarily to establish the human scale in the landscape. The great realism of this work derives in part from the low horizon. Many painters were inspired by Haarlem’s pleasant location close to the dunes and the sea. Wouwerman painted dune landscapes and beach scenes. We know of only a handful of paintings by him.
