Here, we see a day in Manhattan, New York. Large groups of people are moving around. The film focuses on individuals in a larger whole of urban chaos. The image is mostly black-and-white and is played in slow motion. Street sounds come in fragmented waves, seemingly random, on and off. The spectator of this film has a clear view of the face and gaze of a stranger who is unaware that he or she is being filmed. Therefore, the people we see do not enter into a relationship with us, but we do with them. Beat Streuli creates intimate portraits that both formally and conceptually contrast with the commotion and anonymity of a metropolis.
