Demeter, Goddess of the Earth

Demeter, Goddess of the Earth
Demeter, Goddess of the Earth Demeter, Goddess of the Earth

This is a gleaming copper statue of Demeter, the Ancient Greek goddess of agriculture and the earth’s fertility. She is recognisable by her characteristic half pomegranate, which is the symbol of fertility. It is not only the theme that is classical, but the form, too: a sculpture without head and feet is evocative of classical, often partly preserved sculptures. This special specimen was bought from the artist in 1962, an acquisition that left the museum securing a beautiful work from the oeuvre of the now world-famous Russian / French sculptor Ossip Zadkine.
