Episode 1 Episode 1

In Episode 1, which was shot in Chechnya during the war, artist Renzo Martens uses a confrontational method in which to reveal the mechanisms behind the visual economy of war. In a disconcerting and razor-sharp analysis of the assumptions and roles in our observation behaviour, Martens makes the viewer aware of the power and subjectivity of the documentary image. He manages to do this through an apparently simple reversal: Instead of reporting on their situation, he asks the war victims what they think of him.
