Black is the dominant colour in this expressive painting of a woodland landscape. The remaining colour fields were applied in thin layers of paint, revealing the white canvas here and there. The only things painted with more force are the white field road and the red area with the unusual thunderbolt, together with the black trees and contours. This draws the attention to these parts of the painting. Jacoba van Heemskerck studied painting on panes of glass. She also created stained-glass windows, which the colour fields framed by black contours bring to mind.
