Flower Still Life

Flower Still Life
Flower Still Life Flower Still Life

A bouquet of striped tulips, a rose, an orange lily, a red and white carnation, stocks and a cyclamen. This is an imaginary bouquet; these flowers did not bloom at the same time. Flowers were something special, and worth having their ‘portrait’ painted. Striped tulips were the great favourite and are shown prominently here. In Haarlem, the centre of flower-growing, there was only one painter of floral still lifes: Hans Bollongier. Bollongier always painted the flowers more thickly than the background: they are slightly in relief.
