For the series All the People from Tí, photographers Koos Breukel and Roy Villevoye travelled to the eponymous hamlet, hidden deep in the endless forests of Papua New Guinea. For Villevoye, this is familiar territory, as the artist has been travelling to the Asmat area regularly since the early 1990s. The work that he creates while there stems from his contact with the local people. In this series of theirs, Villevoye and Breukel have done exactly what the title suggests: they photographed all the residents of Tí: with Breukel taking close-ups and Villevoye full-lengths. Thus, they emphasise the subjectivity of the outsider’s gaze, and each individual is highlighted from different angles. This portrait of Jefanus Nato is the counterpart to the portrait photo that Roy Villevoye took of the same man.
