In this painting, Jan Toorop depicts the landscape at Veere in the province of Zeeland, on a sunny summer’s day. We can see the canal at Veere, with its small vessels and tideland. This area of land is represented by short, diagonal stripes of paint. The high horizon and the river are represented by lateral paint strokes. The tideland is clearly distinguished from the rest. While the upper part of the composition remains quite faithful to nature, the land jumps out because of the radical touch, the expressive use of colour and the direction of the brushstrokes. While painting ‘Low water, canal at Veere’, Toorop was inspired by artists such as Signac and Seurat, who used comparable methods – stripes and dots of paint – to depict reality in shimmering colour.
