Mary Magdalene
Mary Magdalene Mary Magdalene

Jesus’s follower Mary Magdalene was said to have become a recluse after his death. This is how she is portrayed here, with the Bible on her lap. On the left of the book are Nagel’s signature and the date of the painting. Besides Mary Magdalene, the painting also depicts symbols that allude to the suffering and death of Jesus, whereas in the background a cave with an altar is visible – a reference to the practicing of the Christian faith. This is one of the six known paintings by the Haarlem artist Jan Nagel.
