Pieter Claesz made his reputation with his monochromatic still lifes: paintings of objects on tables recorded with a restrained palette: subtle shades of grey, brown and green. This work, painted in 1632, is very typical of them. In a beautifully balanced composition he placed pewter plates, a silver cup, a Berkemeijer, bread, olives and a lemon on the corner of a table. As usual he signed this work with his initials: PC, adding an ‘H’ for ‘Harlemensis’ (from Haarlem).
