Mother and Child
Mother and Child Mother and Child

By Pieter Fransz de Grebber

Mother and Child
Mother and Child Mother and Child

A woman feeds her child while reading a book, probably a psalter: a virtuous scene. The picture is considered to be a representation of ‘caritas’, charity, generally portrayed as a woman with a bared breast surrounded by children. The painting also suggests a portrayal of Mary and Jesus; the circlet in the woman’s hair may be a concealed reference to a halo.
