To the right on the steps is a company of musicians, with a woman flautist, a violinist, a woman singer and a man playing the lute. Playing music as part of an ensemble is something that requires moderation. On the left a woman is being courted. The two dogs, the fountain (source of love) and the castle (palace of love) are symbols of earthly love. The two themes of love and music are being linked together. The painting contains a message: on the left a warning against excessive frivolity and on the right an appeal to moderation.
