A landscape, with above it an enormous sun. Both landscape and sun are composed of independent stripes and blocks of paint in bright, contrasting colours. The propulsive, revolving movement, which starts in the bottom right and in the upper left corner transforms into the yellow rays of sun, makes this an expressive painting. Jan Sluijters intended to depict the radiance of the light in ‘October sun’. The colours and forms are not realistic. Sluijters was concerned with painting the things which are ‘beyond that which can normally be perceived optically’. The expressive use of colour and the dynamic composition communicate a deep sense of reality. In some ways, the painting brings Van Gogh to mind. Van Gogh also used the sun as a theme in his work and his intentions in doing so were similar: to give expression to a transcendental feeling.
