A gigantic image of a pandanus – also known as a screw palm – with a sketch of the plant’s spiral form on the right. “I visualise the forces and properties that are in a plant,” explains the maker, Sjoerd Buisman. Trees, plants, branches, leaves and pumpkins form the starting points for numerous works by the artist. He collects and manipulates them, distorts them, hangs them upside down, uses them for land-art projects, and photographs them. Research into, and utilisation of, the growth processes often play a key role. This particular piece resulted from a trip to Venezuela and the Philippines.
