Peasants returning home. A woman is carrying the harvest on her head. The landscape is painted in tints of green and brown with very few bright colours. This ‘tonal’ use of colours was fashionable in landscape painting around 1630-1640. Pieter de Molijn was born in London with Flemish parents. At the age of about 20 he went to live in Haarlem. De Molijn painted the landscapes in the background on a few of Hals’s portraits.
