Portrait of Henri ten Holt
Portrait of Henri ten Holt Portrait of Henri ten Holt

This is a significant portrait of the 30-year-old Henri ten Holt, one of the Bergen School of painters and father of the well-known composer Simeon ten Holt. Henri ten Holt painted landscapes and portraits under the influence of French Cubism, among other things. This portrait of him by his friend Jaap Weyand is clearly also interpreted as Cubist: the visible reality is abstracted in polygonal and round geometric forms, which make the painting a visual piece of music that is full of rhythm. At the same time, it is also a powerfully expressive portrait. It shows a man who is supporting his lightly upward-tilted head with his left arm, and has his eyes open: is he absorbed in thought, or is he considering, with great intent, the world that he faces?
