Portrait of Madame B.
Portrait of Madame B. Portrait of Madame B.

By Jan Theodoor Toorop

Portrait of Madame B.
Portrait of Madame B. Portrait of Madame B.

Jan Toorop painted this portrait of Madame B. during a summer stay at Domburg. Madame B. may have been Toorop’s sister, who was married to Mr Beets. The painting is composed of short brushstrokes. Madame B. stands out from the background due to a difference in colour. The surroundings are largely dark green while Madame B.’s clothing is yellow and blue. This colour contrast ensures all attention is aimed at the lady. The focus is drawn towards her face through her clothes, which, in contrast to the rest of the piece, is depicted with a fair amount of detail. The method used here by Toorop makes this painting an early example of luminism. This school is typified by the central depiction of light. Here, Toorop has drawn inspiration from French post-impressionist artists such as Cezanne, Signac and Gauguin.
