First we see Anthonie Charles de Liedekercke, captain at sea and from 1640/1641 envoy in Morocco. In Liedekercke’s hand, protruding from his cape, is a hat. This is a pose often seen in portraits of men by Verspronck and Hals, the two main portrait painters in Haarlem. This portrait is one of a pair, the other is of Liedekercke’s wife, Willemina van Braeckel. In addition, we see Willemina van Braeckel, wife of Anthonie Charles de Liedekercke. They were married in 1627 in Amsterdam. Ten years later Verspronck painted their portraits. At the time they lived in Haarlem. Willemina is wearing expensive clothes and is holding a fan. She wears a wedding ring on the index finger of her right hand. Wedding rings could be worn on any finger, even the thumb. The lace, the jewelry, and the gold brocade illustrate Verspronck’s precision.
