Portrait of a lady with gloves

This portrait presents an unknown woman in a dark dress with a large white collar and white cuffs, and wearing a small cap. Her attire is complemented by a pair of white leather gloves: she wears one and holds the other. The portrait was previously badly overpainted, which is why the eminent Frans Hals expert, Seymour Slive, still doubted its attribution in his 1974 catalogue. In the meantime, it has been restored and Hals’ painting technique is visible once again. Particularly the vigorous execution of the gloves is characteristic of Hals’ work around 1645-50.
