Sarah Lucas took a photograph of herself slumped in a chair, legs apart. Two fried eggs are placed on her t-shirt at breast level. In one way Lucas adopts a masculine somewhat graceless posture, while in another she emphasizes her womanhood in an absurd, comical fashion. Lucas’ self-portraits question the stereotypical image of women. She subverts existing power relationships by photographing herself as a man. ‘The moment I let feminism into my life, or when it came into my life, it caused a massive about-face. What interested me was the whole idea that you can see things completely differently and it’s just a case of making a small adjustment in your head.’
