Self-Portrait Self-Portrait

This self-portrait has a particular form. Cornelis van Haarlem depicted himself in his twenties, with much confidence and still at the early stages of his career. The painter was born in Haarlem in 1562. After his artistic training he spent several years in Rouen and in Antwerp. In 1583 Cornelis van Haarlem produced the earliest known Haarlem civic guard painting, in which he also portrayed himself.
