A so-called ‘pronkstilleven’ or luxurious still life with expensive objects such as a Chinese dish, a salt cellar, a flute glass, a silver ewer and a fallen nautilus cup (made from a nautilus shell). Heda’s still lifes gradually became fuller and richer after 1640: the number of objects grew and they stood closer together. The colours also became richer. Through his luxurious still lifes Heda was able to display his talents: he was a master at rendering different fabrics and materials and the reflections of light.
