The smoke of the salutes: the royal couple arriving on the ship the Prince Royal, flying the white flag with the Enlish royal standard. The ship in the centre foreground, belongs to the House of Orange. The princes Maurice and Frederick Henry greet their guests. The barge carrying the royal couple sails into Flushing. This was a highly important event for the United Provinces: Frederick V was a symbol of the Protestant cause and the fight against Spanish aggression and the Inquisition. This explains why the subject was often depicted, among them Vroom’s pupil Cornelis van Wieringen and the Utrecht painter Adam Willaerts.
