Four mediaeval saints, depicted from left to right: Boniface (c. 675-745), bishop and missionary in the Netherlands, murdered at Dokkum; Pope Gregory the Great (c. 540-604), biographer of Benedict, founder of the Benedictine order; the monk and preacher Adalbert (d. 741) and the priest Hieronymus of Noordwijk, both of them patron saints of the abbey of Egmond, where their relics are conserved. This panel originally hung in the Benedictine abbey at Egmond, the oldest abbey in the Netherlands, where the painter himself temporarily lived. Some of the heads may be portraits of abbots.
