The Lamentation of Christ

On the center panel Christ has been taken down from the cross and his mother Mary weeps over him. To the right, the apostle John (in red cloak) and Joseph of Arimathea (kneeling). In the background, the city of Jerusalem. This pietà-scene is apocryphal (not Biblical). On the side-panels kneel the donors, who commissioned the altar-piece. Behind the man stands the apostle Peter with the key of heaven; behind his wife, Paul, with a sword: he was beheaded. The painting is a small, simplified copy of a picture painted by Geertgen to Sint Jans for the Haarlem St John’s Monastery (now in Vienna).
