By Lucebert (Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk)

The Masquerade
The Masquerade The Masquerade

A strange masquerade, with vicious and mournful grimaces. Lucebert wrote of his work: ‘The creatures that populate my paintings are either monstrous, powerless or both at the same time, and as such reflect the schizophrenia and paranoid temperament of the human species which has unfolded fully in our time.’ Lucebert was attached to the Cobra group for some time. In addition to being a painter he was also a poet. He was awarded the Jacobus van Looy prize in 1991, a decoration for those with talent in two areas.
