The Elisabeths Gasthuis is Haarlem’s oldest hospital. This hospital stood on the corner of Gasthuisvest and Groot Heiligland, opposite the Frans Hals Museum, from the early 17th century to 1971. The lady governors of the Elisabeths Gasthuis commissioned portraits from Verspronck in 1641, his first large group portrait. In Verspronck’s painting a hospital bed is visible through the open door on the right.
