The Temptation of St Anthony

St. Anthony Abbot prays inside a hollow tree. He is attacked by monstrous creatures. They try to persuade him to lead a dissolute life. Through his staunch faith Anthony resisted temptation. The pig on the lower right is an attribute of Anthony and the monastic order named after him. The monks of St. Anthony cared for the city’s sick. In return they were allowed to let their pigs roam the streets freely. St. Anthony is venerated as the saint who gives protection from human and animal diseases. The artist, Jan Mandijn, came from Haarlem and worked in Antwerp from 1530. He often painted fantastic landscapes.
