Roger Hiorns’ foam-producing sculptures are technically straightforward devices: a pump gently blows air through a reservoir of water and bath foam liquid, which creates an ever-changing column of finely textured white foam. The sculptures themselves are vessel shaped found objects made of stainless steel or porcelain. The British artist, who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2009, is interested in processes of transformation, organic growth, and inconclusiveness. There is a concern with physicality and eroticism, too – evidenced in the foam sculptures’ allusions to the naked human body, and associations with ejaculation. These are strange objects, effectively re-assessing their object-ness by infinitely reshaping their physical appearance.
