Storm on the Noorder Buiten Spaarne. In the background Haarlem with, from left to right, the Bakenesserkerk, the clock tower and the church of St Bavo. A seemingly random inscription, AVE on a barrel to the right, is in fact the signature of the painter, Allaert van Everdingen. Van Everdingen painted sea and river scenes and captured views of many towns and cities on the water. He was a great admirer of Jan Porcellis, and owned no fewer than thirteen of his paintings.
