In the background, the city of Haarlem with its church towers and windmills is depicted. In the foreground, ships on the river. The river Spaarne was an important route to Haarlem. At that time most transport was by boat. The ship on the left carries Haarlem’s flag: red, with sword and stars. Vroom painted the Bavokerk in the centre of the painting. There are other recognizable towers too: left, the Bakenesserkerk, and, between the sails of the large ship the tower of the New Kerk. Hendrick Vroom of Haarlem was the first Dutch painter to specialize in sea and river views.
