Jan Miense Molenaer
Jan Miense Molenaer Jan Miense Molenaer

Jan Miense Molenaer (Haarlem, 1609/1610 – Haarlem, 1668) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, print artist and draughtsman from North-Holland. During his lifetime he worked alternately in Haarlem, Amsterdam and Heemstede. He was married to Judith Leyster, who was also an artist. After she passed away in 1660, he settled in Haarlem and lived there until his own death eight years later.

Jan Molenaer was a pupil of Frans Hals, and subsequently taught his own wife. His works had much in common with those of his teacher at the beginning of his career. In addition to allegorical paintings, he also made portraits, still lifes and – especially towards the end of his life – many genre scenes.
