Jan Theodoor Toorop
Jan Theodoor Toorop Jan Theodoor Toorop

Jan Theodoor Toorop (Indonesia, 1858 – The Hague, 1928) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, watercolourist and graphic artist. He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts (‘Academy of Fine Arts’) in Brussels and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (‘National Academy of Visual Arts’) in Amsterdam. He worked in various places around the Netherlands, but also travelled to England, Paris, Brussels and Ireland.

Jan Toorop was a pupil of August Allebé and also taught dozens of artists himself. He painted all kinds of religious scenes, allegories, landscapes and portraits. Jan Toorop worked with charcoal, chalk or oil paints, and often used glass as a surface. His style of painting is characterised by Art Nouveau and Les Vingt: a group of Belgian painters, designers and sculptors that was active at the end of the 19th century. In 1891 he founded the Haagsche Kunstkring (‘The Hague Art Circle’) together with artist Théophile de Bock and architect Paul du Rieu.
