Jan van Scorel
Jan van Scorel Jan van Scorel

Jan van Scorel (Schoorl, 1495 – Utrecht, 1562) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and architect from North-Holland. During his lifetime, he worked in many different places in Europe, including Cologne, Venice, Rome and Ghent. During his stay in Rome, he was temporarily appointed as curator of antiquities at the Vatican.

Back in the Netherlands, Jan van Scorel settled in Utrecht. In addition to painting various portraits and religious scenes, he also worked there as a clergyman. He then appeared in Haarlem in around 1528. Maerten van Heemskerck is sometimes referred to as his pupil, but it is more likely he was some sort of assistant in Jan van Scorel’s studio. After working in Haarlem for a period of time, Jan van Scorel left for Utrecht again, where he set up a successful studio that made altarpieces.
