Pieter Claesz
Pieter Claesz Pieter Claesz

Pieter Claesz (Antwerp, 1597/1598 – Haarlem, 1660/1661) was a Dutch Golden Age painter originating from South-Holland. He worked in Antwerp for a year, where he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke, before moving to Haarlem, where he worked for the rest of his life.

Pieter Claesz was the teacher of his prolific painter son Nicolaes Berchem. As far as we know, Pieter Claesz only painted still lifes. Compared to his earlier works, his later ones were slightly flatter in terms of colour and somewhat looser in style. He devoted a great deal of time and attention to the light reflection of the painted objects.
