EN NL
Our collection

The Frans Hals Museum’s collection is owned by the Municipality of Haarlem and is managed by the museum. The collection is incredibly diverse: old and modern art, contemporary art, historical objects and craft work. We want to show as much of our collection as possible, both at home and abroad. Therefore, lending work to other museums contributes to our goal of sharing knowledge and art, and of conversing with the outside world.

Generous policy

In principle, all the works from our collection can be borrowed, with the (main) exception of Hals’ Civic Guard Group pieces. Other exceptions when it comes to loaning works include: the physical condition of a specific work may not facilitate its loan; the work has already been reserved; the capacity of the requesting institution is insufficient; the maximum permissible exposure to light has already been reached; or fragility causes too great a risk. Furthermore, our loan conditions must be met. These are explained in detail here.

Requirements

Loan requests should be submitted to the Frans Hals Museum via loans@franshalsmuseum.nl no later than six months before the opening of the exhibition. In their request, the applicant needs to provide all the relevant information: a concept of the exhibition; a case for the importance of the loan within the exhibition; and a recent facility report. The Frans Hals Museum will treat all the information provided confidentially.

The loan application is then discussed in the museum’s monthly curatorial meeting. Then, the physical condition of the requested work is checked. After a decision has been made, the collection registrar provides feedback to the loan applicant.

Costs

The following internal costs are calculated with regards to loans:

  • Administration fee: €150
  • Drawing up a Condition Report: €100
  • Preservation, preservative treatment, or restoration carried out by internal employees: €70 per hour

In addition, all externally incurred costs are also passed on.
