Videoworks
The exhibition presented six video works by Andrea Fraser (Billings, Montana, 1965). In the videos, Fraser delivers hilarious and unsettling rants targeting the narrow-minded conventions of museums, the bloated intellectualism of the art critics and the single-minded commercialism of the gallery scene. In Museum Highlights: A Gallery Talk (1989, 29 min.), Fraser plays a guide in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, discussing ordinary objects like the chair of a museum attendant or the men’s restroom with superlatives usually reserved for works of art. Five of the presented video works were acquired by the museum.
