Breakfast by Pieter Claesz. (1625)
Thanks to a long-term loan from a private collection, we now can offer you an amazing breakfast… painted by Pieter Claesz in 1625.
In this still life you see simple foods such as cheeses, fish and bread, along with precious crockery. Striking are the beautifully rendered spring onions at the rear left, which are not often seen in still lifes from that time. And in the middle, the greasy herring catches the eye.
The basket with cheeses on which a Wanli porcelain dish balances with butter is also cleverly painted. Pieter Claesz came to Haarlem in 1621-22 and was probably educated in Antwerp. He was famous for depicting textures and the work is now on display at Hof as part of our collection exhibition Haarlem Heroes.Other Masters.
