Art Collection & Gathering of Knowledge

Art collection and gathering knowledge
Frans Hals Museum platform for researchers

Frans Hals is one of the three greatest artists in the Netherlands of the seventeenth century, alongside Rembrandt and Vermeer. There are still many questions regarding Hals for which experts have yet to find an unequivocal answer. Indeed, compared to other Dutch masters, relatively little research has been conducted on Frans Hals.

The Frans Hals Museum has the world’s largest, most important collection of Frans Hals’s work. As the figurehead of Haarlem’s art and the person after whom the museum is named, Frans Hals takes centre stage in the museum’s activities. The museum has therefore set up the Frans Hals Research Center as an academic platform to facilitate, encourage, coordinate and publicize the study of Frans Hals. The focus of this research is the operation of Frans Hals’s workshop. How did it function? How did Hals relate to his predecessors and contemporaries and what impact did he have on the artists who followed him?

The FHRC fosters knowledge about Frans Hals through cooperative projects in the Netherlands and abroad. These may take various forms, including (contributions to) publications, conferences, restoration and exhibitions.

Cooperative projects include:
Frans Hals lecture organized with Codart
Frans Hals organized with RKD Studies
Frans Hals symposium
Restoration organized with MASP
Restoration of Governors and Governesses
