Art Collection & Gathering of Knowledge
Frans Hals (Antwerp, 1582/1583 – Haarlem, 1666), together with Rembrandt and Vermeer, is one of the three greatest painters of the 17th century. He mainly painted genre scenes and portraits, and is best known for his free, painterly brushstroke.
The Frans Hals Museum has the world’s largest, most important collection of Frans Hals’s work. As the figurehead of Haarlem’s art and the person after whom the museum is named, Frans Hals takes centre stage in the museum’s activities. The museum has therefore set up the Frans Hals Research Center.
