Painter, Writer, Art Historian
Karel van Mander (1548-1606) was the first Dutch art historian with his ‘Schilder Boeck’ (1603-04). The information collected by him about painting contemporaries is still widely consulted. In addition, Van Mander himself was a professional painter, designer of prints, poet and translator. And presumably he was also a mentor of Frans Hals. A small presentation with a number of paintings, prints, drawings and original prints of his books elucidated this versatile personality.
