Jan Miense Molenaer was around 18 when he painted this tavern scene. He may still have been apprenticed to Frans Hals’s workshop at the time. In this picture of a boy sitting by a fireplace, Molenaer showed off his skills: the sparkling flames of the fire, the pewter of the tankard and the lad’s relaxed pose. His flushed cheeks betray the combined effect of warmth, beer and tobacco.
