A panorama of the landscape near Haarlem. Linen lies bleaching in the fields. There were many bleaching grounds in and around Haarlem in the 17th century. The climate and the clean water from the dunes produced good results and the ‘Haarlem bleach’ was accordingly world famous. Jan Vermeer belonged to a Haarlem family of artists which for four generations produced painters all called Jan.
