A prominent Haarlem resident in a dignified pose: Nicolaes van der Meer (1574-1637). He was a beer brewer, alderman, several times burgomaster and civic guard officer. His portrait belongs with that of his wife Cornelia Vooght, with whom he married in 1589. The coat of arms was added later, done with paint that was only used after 1720. It is clear from x-rays that Van der Meer’s portrait was painted over another portrait. It is not known why it was painted over.
