Stag Hunt in the Dunes

By Gerrit Claesz Bleker

Stag Hunt in the Dunes
Stag Hunt in the Dunes Stag Hunt in the Dunes

Two stags at bay, chased by hunters and dogs. The hunters are dressed in the colourful French fashion. One of them is blowing a horn, the three riders draw their rapiers (swords). To the right in this glowing landscape another group of hunters can be seen. In the distance, surrounded by forests, stands a castle. Stag hunting was a popular subject in 16th-century Flemish art. The low horizon, the ample trees, the vistas and the choice of colours all indicate Flemish influence. Yet Bleker lived and worked in Haarlem.
