The entrance to the Fish Market at the foot of the northern transept of the Bavokerk. In the background, the Town Hall. Until 1603 fish was sold on Market Square. The Fish Market was built for the sale of sea fish because of the terrible smell. River fish continued to be sold outside: on the river fish market. This is just one of Berckheyde’s versions of this painting. The various paintings do not differ greatly.
