The Vleeshal (Meat Market), to the right of the church, was built in 1602-1603 by Lieven de Key, the city architect. The Meat Market is now part of the Frans Hals Museum. Art can now be seen where once meat was sold. The low building adjacent to the church is the old fish market of 1603. The present building dates from 1768. The person walking, to the left in the foreground, had been painted over and was only rediscovered during restoration work.
